The Taize Service comes from the monastic community founded in France by
Brother Roger in 1940. Three times each day, everyone gathers for prayer centered
on singing. The community wanted to unite people of all countries and decided that
music would bring people together.
The songs are sung again and again by the whole community. For centuries, a few
words offered up unceasingly have been a way of contemplation. Little by little, they
build an inner unity with God. And when the words are sung, they reach the depths
of our being even more.
There are traditions in many spiritual paths of laying on of hands as a blessing and
as a healing. Jesus touched and blessed the sick, as did the apostles. The action was
symbolic of spiritual blessings flowing from one person to another.
